Lifestyle Approaches for Managing Type 2 Diabetes –
Which Option Should I choose?

This toolkit was developed for RDNs to help adult patients make an informed decision about how to manage type 2 diabetes using a lifestyle approach. The Decision Worksheet is a tool for discussing lifestyle diabetes management options that may or may not focus on weight management, as well as the pros and cons of each option.

Clinician Guide - Lifestyle Approaches for Type 2 Diabetes

Lifestyle Approaches for Type 2 Diabetes Decision Worksheet

Lifestyle Approaches for Type 2 Diabetes Patient FAQ

Note: The worksheet is designed for use with adult patients who are able to read at an 8th grade level and for those whom weight loss is not contraindicated. A Clinician Guide provides background and lists steps in the shared decision-making process, answers some frequently asked questions, and provides detailed information on the research studies used in the worksheet. A Patient FAQ helps your patients with questions as they decide which option is best for them.

This toolkit went through a thorough review process throughout its development.  Representatives from the Weight Management DPG Executive Committee, including RDNs working in diabetes care, two RDNs working with a Health at Every Size® approach to diabetes care, and several patients with diabetes reviewed and provided feedback.   Updated versions were then followed by reviews from the staff from the Health Decision Sciences Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and a health literacy specialist at MGH.
