Members of the athletic medicine team constantly face fueling and mental health challenges. Understanding the connections between mental health, proper fueling and performance may be the missing piece for the hectic lives of athletes as well as the providers that care for them.
Sport psychology and sports nutrition have more in common than some might realize. Both involve creating consistent habits and prioritization for overall success. Research suggests that at least half, if not more of sport success can be attributed to mental factors. Evidence also indicates to effectively optimize performance, recognizing the impact of various factors including diet, stress, sleep and alcohol consumption are just as essential as training.
Sport psychology training can be used for athletes in slumps, but more importantly to prevent setbacks in the first place, just as proper nutrition and hydration practices can be preventative measures for side-stepping performance deficits and injury.
Through audience polling, engaging lecture, case-studies and group debriefs, this interactive session will help RDNs in all settings unlock useful, practical and evidence-based resources and strategies to improve nutrition and mental health, not only for the athletes they care for, but for their own quality of life.
