    Hi Joan,

Yes, EoE is becoming more common. It is usually diagnosed with an endoscopy which may show deposits of eosinophils along the  esophageal tract. The treatment protocol is a six foods elimination diet - avoid wheat, dairy, fish,/seafood, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, and soy. This is usually accompanied with medication treatments/steroids to reduce inflammation. Once the eosinophil count comes down, we slowly reintroduce food groups one at a time.  It's a strict diet, but it can be done by well planned meals. I give sample menus and recipes to my patients. Let me know if you need anything specific.

My son has EoE.  He's had it since he was three years old and is now 17. Most research does indicate that the most probable triggers of EoE are related to top 8 allergens, but with dairy being one of the highest probable.  Some research also suggests an environmental element as well.   There is still a lot to learn about the actual causation of EoE.  The definitive diagnosis is made through a biopsy and gold standard of care is jointly managed by an allergist/gastroenterologist team.  This level of care can ensure that allergic triggers are being addressed while also coordinating GI management.  Dietary management is a critical part of care but there are also incredible fairly recent advances in medication that have made treatment more practical. Would advise finding an EoE clinic setup inclusive of RDN, allergist and gastroenterologist at a research center for best quality of care. Many adults try to manage through the symptoms without seeking care and it is important to note that this can cause permanent esophageal scarring leading to dysfunction, so it is critical to seek treatment and maintain monitoring.
