WM-LAHIDAN Webinar: Weight Management Counseling in Latino Communities

    Wednesday, May 20, 2026, 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM ET
Join us! This webinar explores culturally responsive weight management counseling in diverse Latino communities. Speakers will discuss how cultural food traditions, family dynamics, health beliefs, and regional differences influence nutrition behaviors and treatment decisions. The session covers strategies for integrating traditional Latino foods into weight management plans, addresses perceptions of body image and health , and reviews medical and surgical weight-loss options , including GLP-1 medications and bariatric surgery. Case examples will highlight culturally sensitive counseling across the lifespan, including menopause-focused care , emphasizing health equity, cultural humility, and practical application for dietetics professionals. Learning objectives: Identify cultural, social, and familial factors influencing weight management behaviors in Latino communities. Apply health equity principles to adapt nutrition counseling strategies that reduce avoidable disparities. Describe culturally appropriate ways to incorporate traditional Latino foods into evidence-based weight management plans. Compare weight management options (lifestyle therapy, pharmacotherapy, bariatric surgery) through a culturally sensitive and ethical lens. Demonstrate strategies to provide respectful, inclusive, and patient-centered counseling that supports equitable health outcomes. This webinar is a joint initiative between LAHIDAN MIG and WM DPG. We anticipate that the webinar will be approved for 1 hour CPEU (to include ethics).
