I recently learned that the The National Kidney Foundation is petitioning the FDA to add phosphorus to the nutrition facts label. This is mainly a problem due to added phosphorus in processed and fast food, of which > 90% is absorbed. (Compare to the 40 to 70% absorbed from natural phosphorus in whole foods, with less absorbed from plant foods like beans, peas, nuts, and seeds.) Without a designated spot on the label, CKD and dialysis patients must consult the ingredients list for all mentions of "PHOS," and guess at the relative amount in the product.
