Key Takeaways: Examine the impact of offering free breakfast to all students and various breakfast services models on the participation of the school breakfast programs in North Carolina public schools. The study analyzed 2,285 schools and over 1.4 million students. Innovative models such as Breakfast In Class and grab and go resulted in increased participation in the School Breakfast Program (SBP). Offering free breakfast or universal breakfast also increased SBP participation, however, effectiveness of these programs varied across schools, and need a more tailored approach.
