Professional Athletes: Much research has been conducted in recreational athletes. Future studies should investigate differences and main effects of plant-based diets on athletic performance in professional/elite athletes.
Endurance Exercise Capacity: Future research should investigate the effects of various plant-based diets on endurance in varying levels of athletic performance.
Long-Term Adherence: Studies lasting >6 months should be conducted to investigate the effects of long-term adherence on athletic performance.
Diverse Populations: Future studies should investigate the effects of plant-based nutrition and athletic performance across racial, ethnic, age, and gender groups including differences between recreational and professional athletes.
