This cross-sectional study examined how replacing carbohydrates with fats or proteins affects fat distribution and liver fat in adults with recent-onset type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Among those with type 1 diabetes, replacing carbs with protein was linked to higher subcutaneous fat. In type 2 diabetes, polyunsaturated fats and plant protein were associated with lower visceral and liver fat, while saturated fat was linked to increased liver fat. These findings highlight the importance of macronutrient quality in early diabetes management.
