Key Takeaways: A 2017 validation study assessed automated self-administered 24-hour dietary recall for children,2014 version (ASA24 Kids-2014). ASA24 Kids-2014 was administered during lunch for middle school children. The sample included 96 children in Eastern Pennsylvania and compared ASA24 Kids-2014 with direct observation of school lunches. Results indicated 58% of foods were inaccurately recalled in the ASA24 Kids-2014; the ASA24 Kids-2014 was able to correctly recall estimated portion sizes in which there was no significant difference between the ASA24 Kids-2014 and direct observations. This study showed a positive association of all food meal components assessed with both ASA24 Kids-2014 and direct observations. The ASA24 Kids-2014 and observations is a promising tool for dietary assessment in school settings but limitations with recall inaccuracies.
