A Group Randomized Intervention Trial Increases Participation in the School Breakfast Program in 16 Rural High Schools in MinnesotaNanney, Marilyn S. et al.Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Volume 119, Issue 6, 915 - 922
Key Takeaways: Evaluated the effectiveness of a school-based intervention aimed at increasing participation in School Breakfast Programs (SBP). The study was conducted in Minnesota in 16 high schools, 8 in the intervention group and 8 in the control group. The intervention schools received improved access to breakfast (e.g., grab n go, cart in the atrium, and expanding breakfast time), and secondly, promotion of the school breakfast program through student-directed market campaigns. The result showed a significant increase in SBP participation rates. The medium rate from the baseline to follow-up was 3 % among the intervention schools and compared to 0.5% among control schools. By the end of the year mean participation rate for the intervention school increased by 10.3%. While the intervention was effective overall, there were varying results in terms of participation rates among intervention schools, ranging from a decrease of 0.8% to an increase of 24.8%.
